The Virginia Hotel was built in 1879 by Alfred and Ellen Ebbitt. It operated as a small hotel consistently through several owners until it was sold in the 1960's. In the early 1980's the entire structure was condemned. The Virginia was purchased in 1986, completely renovated, and reopened in 1989. The restored dining room was named the Ebbitt Room in honor of the founders and original operators of the hotel.

Ever since the The Ebbitt Room opened, it has created quite a stir. Not only is the dining room lovely, the service superb, but the chefs have been so good that the reviews consistently name The Ebbitt Room as the best of the best. Their reviews are all raves: the New York Times: "Superb", "Creatively prepared dishes", "Memorable". For the past seven years they have received awards for "Best Hotel Dining", "Best Atmosphere", "Best Romantic Dining", as well as "Best of the Best" in Southern New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly's reader's choice poll.

All courses are prepared with the freshest ingredients by very talented chefs. The appetizers include: Seared Foie Gras, Tuna Tartare, Tempura Calamari, Chilled Green Oysters and Duck Confit. The Ebbitt Room is known for its Sauteed Sea Bass, King Salmon, Mushroom Crusted Tuna, Grilled Filet of Beef and Baby Rack of Lamb.

The Ebbitt Room has a small, well stocked bar. You can enjoy an aperitif or after dinner drink in the fireplace lounge while listening to Steve LaManna on the piano.

The Ebbitt Room is open for Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday dinners but make your reservations early as they are generally booked. The Ebbitt Room also has a lovely private dining room called the Richmond Room suitable for a business or family occasion.

Reservations are recommended and there is valet parking in season which is a real plus in the heart of Cape May. After dinner, you can stroll along the beach as it is only about 300 feet away.
